Yale’s Graduate and Professional Student Cultural Center Crawl (G&P Crawl) will be on Wednesday, September 21 starting at 5pm. This year’s Crawl will begin with introductions and a chance to learn about the Office of LGBTQ Resources. Following, you will be invited to visit any of the four Cultural Centers (Afro-American Cultural Center, Asian American Cultural Center, La Casa Cultural and Native American Cultural Center) as well as the Chaplain’s Office.
The MENA Welcome Mixer is an opportunity for students who identify as Middle Eastern/North African to meet one another and also learn more about the Asian American Cultural Center (AACC) and Afro-American Cultural Center (AfAm) as university resources. Is race only about the color of your skin? In this talk, Dr. Ocampo, Assistant Professor of Sociology at Cal Poly Pomona, focuses on Filipino Americans to show that what “color” you are depends largely on your social context. Filipino Americans are officially classified as Asian, but share many cultural characteristics with Latinos. Are they “becoming” Asian or Latino? By elevating the voices of Filipino Americans, Dr. Ocampo will discuss how their racial identities “change” depending on the communities they grow up in, the schools they attend, and the people they befriend.
